Despite being a neighbor to Fallarbor Town, Gunner did not often find himself in Rustboro City. That week, however, a business meeting required him to stay the night at a hotel, and before leaving for home the next morning, he figured he could fit in a quick jog around the city center.[break][break]

Accompanied by his Arcanine, Gunner set off at a steady pace, the sparse clouds above dashed with pink and yellow as the sun began its climb upon the sky. Rustboro itself was stirring from a long slumber, the first citizens emerging from their homes with coffee in hand. Gunner himself would grab a cup from the nearest café once he finished his run.[break][break]

Ahead, a flash of bright, orange-red fur caught his eye — another Arcanine, jogging in the same direction, with its trainer sporting the same hue of hair. Gunner frowned, calculating how to proceed. There wasn't much room for two large dogs on the sidewalk.[break][break]

"Excuse me! Coming through!" he called out, hoping to squeeze by without much hassle.

Ryuji had been mainly busy up at the crack of dawn like most days that seemed to blend together with one another. After pushing Ace off of him as he normally did, the Kanto man greeted the day by making breakfast, coffee and then a morning jog. Today was just like any other as his long red hair bobbed up and down with every step taken. While not entirely desolate in the early part of the morning, Rustboro was still fairly active at this time of the day, as bakeries were preparing to open for the day while employees set up the first of many batches of sweets and pastries. His sweet tooth yearned for one but he forbade himself in indulging in anything after the recent new year festivities had concluded. Ace ran beside him, panting and letting out a cheerful bark at any passing person nearby. All seemed so calm and quiet before the sound of somebody coming up from behind him would catch Ryuji's ears. His unease heightened as a shiver ran down his back. His already quick heartbeat was picking up the pace. Ryuji looked behind him to see another man jogging behind him. His pause had caused Ace to freeze in place as well, now blocking the entirety of the road. Once the man had called out to him, Ryuji would step aside for him and exhale in relief.

He cursed his past experiences and continued on, hoping to catch up to the man and offer an apology for his slipup. It took but a few seconds of increasing his pace before the blonde found himself with Ryuji running beside him, with Ace hopping along behind them.

"Sorry about taking up the road. I...thought you were somebody else." Sure, it was pretty much skating over a big issue, but there wasn't really a need to spill his life story onto another stranger on a first conversation. "I'm Ryuji, and that's Ace behind me. I guess we thought we would be the only people jogging at this hour of the morning."

The red-haired man and his Arcanine let them pass. Gunner gave the stranger a quick 'thanks', then put the encounter out of his mind. He had just a few more blocks left, then he'd be back at his hotel.[break][break]

To his surprise, the redhead caught up with him, offering an apology and explanation as he kept pace with Gunner.[break][break]

"No problem," the blonde replied, huffing with exertion. At a traffic stop and a red light, both men and dogs paused to catch their breath. "I'm Gunner, and this is Gwyn Ap Nudd. Nice to meet you."[break][break]

He extended a hand for the stranger, Ryuji, to shake. Likewise, his Arcanine sniffed furiously at Ryuji's, committing the new scent to memory.[break][break]

Unbeknownst to the group, two shady individuals emerged from an ally behind them, hands moving to the Pokéballs clipped to their belts. Their dark expressions settled on the two Arcanines standing with their owners. These were members of Team Rocket, lowly grunts tasked with stealing helpless civilians' Pokémon by knocking them unconscious with their own and scaring off their trainers.[break][break]

How low Rocket had fallen, to hire fools as thieves.

It had been a bit of a jog to catch up with the man, but Ryuji had managed to catch up to the man and his Arcanine as the crosswalk as the light turned red. The group was offered a nice chance to cool down as he'd flash a smile at the man. It was a bit of an awkward start, but he was sure a bit of small talk would be sufficient to help smooth things over. The redhead found his eyes to wander across his form and linger for a moment before he pulled them away and wiped his forehead free of any sweat. Working out had been a tad more difficult when you had such long hair. It was enough to cause his cheeks to turn a faint red color.

"A pleasure to meet the both of you. I, ah, didn't know anybody else would be out this early. So this is a welcome surprise."

Ace sniffed around Gwyn, his tail wagging all about as the canine let out a friendly bark. His fur, while a tad bit unkempt in some areas, show some scars here and there. Little nicks and cuts of a time long past. Ryuji held an arm down to place on Ace's head as he'd continue to try and make small talk with Gunner. It was strange, he hadn't normally been able to talk much with people around, though found himself glancing towards Gunner every now and again before swinging his head away to scan around them. "x"

But something made him feel uneasy. He tensed up, hands balling as he felt something egging him on from behind them. As the Rocket goon would come closer, he'd be swinging his head around before noticing them both. Green eyes went to the trademarked letter adorning their uniforms before his pleasant face had all but vanished, replaced with an expression of silent fury. "You've made the worst mistake of your life stepping foot in this town." His tone had become far more grim, with Ace looking over with a harsh growl.

"If you value your lives, you'll get down on the ground or be scorched off of it."

"I'm usually an early riser," Gunner said, a friendly smile drawn across his face. "I prefer to get my morning jog in before everyone wakes up, grab a coffee, then get ready for the day. That kinda thing."[break][break]

Gunner also wasn't typically a fan of small talk, but it was nice to exchange pleasantries with a stranger from time to time, especially as they waited for the traffic light to turn green. However, Ryuji spotted the Rocket grunts before they could part ways.[break][break]

Gunner rolled his eyes. These idiots were even wearing shirts with big capital R's on the front. Members of Team Rocket were usually much stealthier, choosing to wear civilian clothes. The two goons must have been new recruits.[break][break]

"Or you could hand over your Pokémon and leave quietly!" one of the grunts snapped back at Ryuji. She released a Golbat from a Pokéball, while her partner released a Poochyena.[break][break]

"Wrong choice," Gunner warned, turning to face them fully. His own voice dropped into a threatening rumble.[break][break]

But the Rocket grunts did not heed him. With confident shouts, they ordered their Pokémon to attack.

Ryuji's demeanor didn't once change as the grunt replied about giving over their Pokémon. He continued to glare at the Rocket grunts behind them as they seemed to continue their attempt at an ambush. Rolling his eyes with an annoyed scoff, the redhead moved to hold onto Ace as the grunts moved onto calling out their Pokemon. "Fine. We'll have this your way." Ryuji said looking at two as they gave the command to attack. Ryuji's hand fell off of Ace's head as it seemed their battle was inevitable. At the very least, it would blow off some much needed steam.

"I'll take the Golbat." Ryuji said to Gunner as Ace bounded off towards the flying type. He'd let the canine get closer before giving his first command. "Aim for its wing, Ace!" The Arcanine let out a gruff "rudd" sound as it bound towards the Golbat until it quickly rocketed itself into the air. "Nice try, but that's not happening! Poison Shot the dog, Gulpy!" The Golbat gurgled something firce in its gigantic maw, launching globules of lavender spittle across the area around then. Even Ryuji had to take cover, while Ace bounced back from something impacting him. "Still kicking, Ace?" A proud bark let him knew that everything was perfect. The Golbat, continued to launch poison shots from above, never once coming down. "Tch, too fast to really touch it." His eyes shot around to the nearby scenery, looking at the bus stop near by as his mind hatched an idea.

"Fall back and get some speed." Ace hopped back some distance from the danger zone, Ryuji popping back out to quickly point at the bus depot. "Use Extreme Speed, Ace!" The Arcanine then took off in a dead sprint, galloping towards the bus stop and hopping up on top. The metal groaned under the sudden weight, but Ryuji was ready. "Jump off of it and bite it down!" Another howl came as the Arcanine launched itself from the bus stop towards the Golbat as the Team Rocket member panicked.

"A-Ah! Arcanine are supposed to be on the ground! Gulpy, get ou- Huh?" There came a fierce cry as Ace had bitten down on the Golbat's left wing, the wounded bat wobbling down to the ground and making contact. The bite and sudden impact from the ground and knocked out out complete. The Rocket grunt saw this and shook with fear. "G-Gulpy! I'll come back for you!" Ace saw this, picking himself up from the ground and racing after her. She rounded the corner as the Arcanine followed, then returned with the grunt's arm in his mouth as she was being dragged by him back to his owner. "Thieving and cowardly. How very Rocket of you."

Ryuuji and his Pokémon faced the Rocket grunt with her Golbat, leaving Gunner to deal with the second grunt and his Poochyena. The blonde man sighed. "This is a waste of time. Gwyn?"[break][break]

Gwyn Ap Nudd needed no command. He launched himself at the Poochyena, attacking with PLAY ROUGH. The Dark-type Pokémon yelped in alarm and attempted to fight back, but the Arcanine had the clear advantage due to his size, speed, and battle prowess.[break][break]

Meanwhile, Gunner sidestepped the battle and engaged the Rocket grunt. Fists flew, but the lowly thief fell quickly to Gunner's practiced strikes. A quick jab smashed into the grunt's head, knocking him unconscious. His body crumpled to the ground just as his Poochyena collapsed, badly burned by Gwyn Ap Nudd's FLAMETHROWER.[break][break]

Gunner looked over to see how Ryuuji and Ace were faring. Seeing them victorious, he called out to the redhead, "Are you okay?"

Ryuji swung back around to face Gunner as he called out to him, the redhead offering a knowing smirk as Ace dragged the Rocket grunt alongside him, her knees dragging across the ground. "Doing just fine. Nice work taking out your guy. Can't say the same for mine." The lowly grunt was begging them for mercy, especially after what the other man had shown that he was capable of doing in the realm of fisticuffs. "Pl-Please! I was j-just joking! Just lemme go and we can just walk our separate ways! Please?" She even gave her best attempt at puppy dog eyes before Ryuji narrows his own with a disgusted scoff.

"Tell you what." he began, "Tell us any information about Rocket and I'll just throw you in the cells as quickly as I can. Or we can take the hard way and make a few detours on our way. I'm sure all those people you try this with would love to see you again." The grunt thought about her answer and then shook her head. "Ah-I'm just a part timer! They don't even tell us anything! Just, Go here, do this, steal that! Honest! I don't know anything about the plans."

"Have it your way. I can see eight possible homes on this street alone, and we'll stop by every one. Maybe I'll get distracted and the owners might get to show you exactly what they think of Rocket."

"Okay! Okay! Th-There's a huge branch that's taking everyone's Pokémon! They steal 'em, grade 'em and then either sell 'em on the black market or send them to the science team! Th-that's all I know!"

"Wanna go on a run, Ace?~"

"GRAHHHHH! THE HIDEOUT'S IN A CAVE TO THE WEST OF TOWN! THERE'S A ROCK YOU LIFT UP FOR THE DOOR! JUST DON'T HURT ME!"

"That's more like it." Ryuji said, taking the Rocket cadet by the scruff of her neck while the Arcanine's growl continued to entice her into playing along with their little conversation. "And cheer up. You'll get stay concussion free unlike your friend and have plenty of time to reconsider stealing Pokémon with that sentence of yours."

As Gunner took out his phone to call the police, Ryuji started interrogating the grunt right there at the crosswalk. The blonde man watched, stunned by the redhead's threats. People in cars stared out their windows and other passersby slowed down as they approached, curious and wary.[break][break]

"Hey, maybe we should just let the police handle these two," Gunner said to Ryuji, unaware that he was speaking with an officer and also unwilling to divulge his own profession. But even a special agent for the HBIC knew not to interrogate prisoners in public.[break][break]

Gunner dialed and connected to an operator. "Hello, ma'am? Good morning. An acquaintance and I were jumped by two thugs on the corner of 5th and Swanna. They attacked us but our Pokémon defended us. One's unconscious and the other is… tied up. Can you come — oh, thank you. Yes, we'll stay here until they arrive."[break][break]

He hung up and turned to Ryuji.[break][break]

"They're sending a car to pick these up. Can Ace pin that one down for now?" he asked, gesturing to the criminal Ryuji was manhandling.

Ryuji scoffed at the idea of showing the Rocket any kind of pause or mercy. He hadn't really even noticed how loud his voice had gotten. The redhead looked around at the pair of eyes surrounding them, their murmurs and whispers just faintly audible. It took a second of restraint or so, as he closed his eyes and inhaled deeply, exhaling at a much slower rate. "You're right. I shouldn't cause a scene like this. My apologies." Ace's grip on the girl was still absolute, the Arcanine's tail wagging left and right as the Rocket kept her mouth shut out of fear.

Gavin called the police and Ryuji wiped the sweat from his forehead, reflecting on what he had done in anger. Just unloading some of his pent up anger at Rocket for what they had caused him. His forlorn and somewhat stoic expression returned to his face. He hated when he worked himself up like this, having visited the therapist multiple times to get over this. Ryuji sighed again and just looked at the grunt as she wiggled around, his mood deflated while Gavin spoke up about keeping her here.

"Ace." The man said, "Detain."

Ace would slowly let the Rocket grunt down, but pin her down by using his weight against her own. Not enough to crush her, but she definitely wasn't going to get up without outside help. He barked in response as Ryuji frowned, still facing Gavin. "Sorry. I…don't normally allow myself to get like this. Rockets and I don't exactly have the best track record. Thank you for the help."
